Rospatent received the first application for geographical indication (GI). The application N 2020756296 submitted from Crimea intends to register the Saki Mud as a GI and obtain an exclusive right over this designation. The applicant Saki Mud Trade House (OOO TD Saki Mud) is located in Agrarnoe township (city of Simferopol). The company seeks to register a GI for the Saki Lake mud in various packaging and cosmetic products manufactured on its basis.

The Crimean application was submitted two weeks after Rospatent’s training seminar on Regional Russian Brands: New Points of Growth held in Simferopol. The event was dedicated to the Federal Law on GIs, which came into force on 27 July 2020 and opened up wide opportunities for regional producers to promote their products on the Russian market. The seminar was attended by more than 50 representatives of the Crimean business community.

In course of the seminar, specialists from Rospatent and the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIPS) talked about the differences between GIs and appellations of origin (AOs), and features of the new intellectual property right. They also explained on what grounds a GI application may be rejected, how to file an electronic application, and what are the fees for GI registration and special fee reductions available for small businesses, research institutions, and individual entrepreneurs.

Many indigenous goods are produced in Crimea. They are popular among both guests and locals. All of them are unique especially due to their geographical origin and adherence to traditional manufacturing techniques. The application for registration of Saki Mud as a GI proves this fact once again. The Law on GI, as a new marketing tool, will allow Crimean producers to attract additional investments to the region, stated Rospatent Head Mr. Grigory Ivliev.
