“MSP Bank” issued to “Energoelement” company the first loan in the Russian Federation secured by intellectual property (IP) - two patents for inventions. This is the second case in Russia when a loan is provided against non-standard pledge. In mid-august 2020, Expobank issued the first loan in Russia secured by a cryptocurrency - tokens of the Waves blockchain company. “MSP Bank” has previously accepted IP, but only as additional pledge. According to Roman Kapinos, deputy chairman of the board of “MSP Bank”, IP pledge is assessed by assessing future cash flows that result from the potential of the IP market. However, according to colleagues in the banking sector and experts, it is very difficult to fairly assess IP, while it can be tied to the key employees of the borrowing company and, if they leave, become much cheaper and even disappear. In addition, IP is subject to market, technological, project and other high risks, the implementation of which can lead to a significant loss of its value.
