Since July 27, 2020 in addition to designations of origin (NMTP) it will become possible to register a unique product made in a specific location as a geographical indication (GI). The procedure for registering goods as GI is simplified, and the manufacturers are required to confirm that at least one stage of production is done in the area indicated on the package. According to Head of Rospatent Grigory Ivliev, the GI will protect the products of natural origin, which may have a specific taste, shape, and way of consumption. The regional producers, who were granted the right to use geographical indications to protect their products, will be able to enter the domestic and international markets.

The corresponding mark can be used on the packaging of the goods only by those manufacturers who have the right to use such distinguishing mark, and whose goods fully meet all the requirements for their inclusion in the register of Rospatent.
