RT-PCR test for Omicron

Patent number: 2779025

According to the World Health Organization, the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains the dominant variant circulating globally. At the same time, to date, there are no known test systems suitable for the effective detection of the Omicron.

In this context, the achievement of the researchers at the Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza is quite significant. They have developed a test which enables effective detection of all subvariants of the Omicron virus by a one-step reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

A safer network

Patent number: 2779135

One of the methods to ensure network security is to filter network traffic based on various criteria. In this invention, filtering is based on the analysis of data packet headers. The decision whether to let through or not to let through a network data packet is based on the number of packets: if the number of data packets exceeds a predetermined threshold, they are discarded.

This solution reduces the load on the information system, increases channel capacity and performance, as well as independence from the running software or system architecture.

The 12th meeting of the Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property of the Eurasian Economic Commission Board

On September 9, 2022 the 12th meeting of the Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property of the Eurasian Economic Commission Board (EEC) was held. The event was attended by the representatives of the competent authorities of the EAEU member states. Deputy Head of Rospatent Ms. Viktoria Galkovskaya took part in the meeting.

The agenda of the meeting included the launch of the regional system for the protection of trademarks and appellations of origin. Representatives of the EEC reported on the ongoing work on the documents required for the launch of relevant processes of the EAEU.

When considering the creation of the services for online search for information on industrial property objects protected in the EAEU, the Deputy Head of Rospatent stressed the importance of the discussion aimed at ensuring a high usability and usefulness of the services for the target audience.

Upon the proposal of the Republic of Belarus, the participants discussed the use of compulsory licensing mechanisms. The participants agreed to exchange further information on this issue.

14th BRICS Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Meeting

On September 15, 2022 the 14th BRICS Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Meeting (HIPO) was held via videoconference, chaired by Dr. Shen Changyu, Commissioner of China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).

The meeting was attended by the Heads of BRICS IP Offices, as well as representatives of WIPO as invited guests. Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO delivered a welcoming speech.

Heads of BRICS IP Offices discussed the results of joint projects and approved the AI Study Report (prepared by the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property), the Catalogue of View and Drawing Requirements of Industrial Designs as well as the Comparison Manual on Trademark Application and Examination Procedures (both compiled by CNIPA).

It was noted that the 2021 Examiners’ Training focusing on AI was successfully held by the Indian Office (CGPDTM). The Offices agreed that the 2022 Examiners’ Training will be hosted by CNIPA on 7-11 November in a videoconference format.

New vector vaccine from coronavirus

Patent number: 2779634

A new coronavirus infection has rapidly taken over the world in 2020. Since then, the virus has been constantly mutating, producing new mutant forms.

To combat the virus, pharmaceutical companies began developing vaccines immediately after the pandemic began. The first candidate drugs were available within a few months. However, preclinical and clinical trials of vaccines, as well as the process of production setup took more than a year. Therefore, due to continuous mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the effectiveness of vaccines against its new variants had reduced by the time a large-scale vaccination campaign was launched.

In this context, the invention of the team of scientists of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Honorary Academician N.F. Gamaleya is a very important development for the public health security. The scientists developed a new vector vaccine based on adenovirus providing effective induction of immune response against SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.617.2 (Delta) and SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.529 (Omicron).

3D models introduced at the 41st session of the EAPO Administrative Council

The 41st session of the Administrative Council of the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO) was held in Moscow on September 20, 2022. In the course of the event amendments to the Patent Regulations of the Eurasian Patent Convention were approved, allowing applicants to use 3D models within an application for invention. The forementioned amendments have been developed with regard to best practices of Rospatent.

The participants also discussed the EAPO initiatives aimed at creating regional systems of trademark and utility model protection, development of patent dispute resolution mechanisms, electronic document workflow for the Eurasian applications and patents, as well as the EAPO Pharmaceutical Registry. Furthermore, the Administrative Council adopted the EAPO budget for the next year and revised the fees for industrial designs.

Device for compression of gases and plasmoids

Patent number: 2778129

Rosatom’s invention compresses plasmoids, which is usually used in experiments. Such experiments are needed to develop new technical solutions for plasma fusion, which occurs under extreme conditions that do not exist on Earth.

These extreme conditions are created by a series of shock waves on the plasma placed in a crimping metallic shell in a way that does not destroy the plasma. Thus, a uniform compression of plasmoids to extreme pressures is achieved and there is no decrease in the rate of thermonuclear reactions due to the ingress of metal particles.

The invention can be used in research aimed at fusion reactor designs, as well as in space research, since extreme (high pressure and temperature) plasma states are characteristic of most astrophysical objects, such as stars and atmospheres of giant planets.

Complex for liquefied natural gas production

Patent number: 2778589

One of the most promising ways to transport natural gas is the transportation of liquefied gas. To produce liquefied gas, natural gas is cooled to minus 160 °C. During liquefaction, it is reduced in volume by about 600 times.

Currently, there are several types of production facilities for liquefying natural gas in coastal and offshore areas. These are usually natural gas liquefaction plants set on floating or gravity bases.

Gravity-type foundations are platforms held on the seabed by their own weight and by connection of the lower part of the platform with the ground. The main disadvantage of these platforms is the duplication of equipment on the production lines, as well as impossibility to use the equipment of each of the production lines to back up the equipment of the production complex as a whole.

The technology developed by NOVATEK eliminates unnecessary duplication of equipment at a complex of several platforms. NOVATEK’s inventors created a complex for liquefied natural gas production which allows to use equipment located at one GTF to support the operation of production lines at other GTFs.
