PATENTEE: |
State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom (ROSATOM) on behalf of the Russian Federation |
|
PURPOSE: |
For capturing radioactive aerosols and radioactive iodine compounds formed during pyrochemical reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel. |
|
INNOVATION: |
Iodine isotopes are one of the main short-lived radioactive contaminants of the environment and can be accumulated in the body, replacing natural iodine. The accumulation of radioisotope in tissues affects thyroid cells and can damage vital biological structures such as DNA and enzymes. The disadvantage of existing devices for capturing radioactive contaminants is their propensity to mechanical deterioration, abrasion and clogging, which leads to shorter service life and lower efficiency. The new invention uses interchangeable cartridges with a set of catching elements made of porous material, the sequential arrangement of which can vary depending on the characteristics of the cleaned gas flow monitored by sensors. The invention makes it possible to effectively and reliably capture radioactive contamination out of the gas stream. |

SCOPE OF APPLICATION |
Radiochemical production of the nuclear industry, including safe reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel. |
