PURPOSE:

To ensure the efficiency of the selective ammonia oxidation to nitrogen in a wide range of temperatures and concentrations of ammonia for its use in burners as an alternative fuel source.

INNOVATION:

Every year mankind needs more and more energy. Coal, oil and natural gas are still the main sources of energy in industry and the transport sector. However, their combustion leads to the release of carbon oxides, nitrogen, hydrocarbons, which have a negative impact on the climate and human health. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop and implement new technologies in energy, industry and transport sectors that exclude carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Research and development in the ammonia application, namely, in its use as a carbon-free carrier of hydrogen, is of increasing interest due to the economic and industrial needs for environmentally friendly energy sources. Thus, the use of ammonia as an alternative fuel is considered promising, especially in gas turbines, industrial furnaces and internal combustion engines. The main problem restraining the use of ammonia as a fuel is the formation of nitrogen oxides – NOx (NO2, NO, N2O). The solution to this problem may be the transition to selective catalytic combustion of ammonia to nitrogen and water. This will simultaneously reduce the ignition temperature of the ammonia-air mixture, which is higher than that of hydrocarbon-air mixtures.

The inventors have developed a catalyst for the selective oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen, which is a copper aluminate with a spinel and CuO structure in a certain ratio of phases in the form of granules, characterized by indicators that allow the catalyst to be used in a wide range of temperatures and concentrations of ammonia for its use in burners.

SCOPE
OF APPLICATION:

The invention relates to catalytic processes of selective oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen and may be applied using ammonia as an alternative fuel source.
