Rospatent Received Applications for Registration of Trademarks Related to COVID-19

From the beginning of the year, Rospatent received 26 applications for registration of domestic and international trademarks that mention coronavirus (COVID-19) or the isolation related topics in the name. According to FIPS Deputy Director Roman Zakharov, all applications will be reviewed and analyzed fully and comprehensively for compliance with legal requirements. However, it is open to debate whether such designations can fulfill the key function of a trademark in individualizing a product or service. Regarding some goods, such designations can mislead consumers in the context of the product, its purpose and properties. Moreover, when such designations are used as trademarks, it raises some questions on whether they comply with moral standards.
