The European Patent Office (The EPO)

Cooperation between the EPO and Rospatent is based on the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral cooperation between the Federal Service for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks and the European Patent Office , which was signed on April 17, 2007 in Munich (Germany). The memorandum aims to create a large-scale and flexible mechanism for managing and further developing cooperation between Rospatent and the EPO in the sphere of intellectual property.

During the year 2019 there was an exchange of experience in the sphere of examination of patent applications: Rospatent experts took an active part in training seminars and conferences organized by the EPO. EPO experts attended all key international events of Rospatent.

An important result of the joint work was the approval of the Two-Year Cooperation Program for 2020–2021. The signing of the document with EPO President Antonio Campinos took place on the sidelines of The 59th series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO in Geneva. The document included new areas of joint activities, including the exchange of experience in the examination of inventions in the field of artificial intelligence, the use of new technologies in the activities of Patent offices. In addition, the existing documents on inter-agency cooperation were extended, including the Agreement on the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC).

In 2019, Rospatent continued sending data about Russian patent documents classified by CPC to EPO. New versions of CPC (four versions per year) were installed into the internal information systems of Rospatent with the possibility of their automated translation into Russian.

The SEC classification of applications of the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO) for international search also continued.
